Wayfinding System Design

You’re spending millions of dollars trying to attract visitors to your community. Once these visitors arrive, can they find what you are selling?

One of the highest priority needs of communities throughout the world is the creation of a “Wayfinding System” - the process by which people are efficiently guided from one point to another. Without it, visitors get frustrated and often utter the word you never want to hear – “Next!” – as they leave never to return.

Wayfinding has been described as “the art of directing people through a specific environment.” It is a system devised through logic, creativity and an understanding of human behavior.

Many visual cues are employed to communicate successful wayfinding. Signage is only one essential part of an effective system that includes architecture, landscape, landmarks and lighting. When combined with branding principles, a wayfinding system can package an environment, create a memorable experience and establish a unique sense of place. Creating a wayfinding system is as much an art as it is a science. It’s not cheap to implement, but the return on investment can be incredible.

DDI Wayfinding Systems include the specific design and placement of directional signage to attractions, downtown districts, amenities and services, placement and design of gateways and visitor information kiosks, and identification of key decision points. Once the system has been designed, the community receives a “bid ready” plan, so the follow-up step is simply having the system built and installed. A decorative wayfinding system will reinforce your branding efforts and increase local awareness and visitor spending.
